I'll watch, but right now I'm just not as enthused as I used to be. Maybe the program is getting old for me, or maybe the stupid vote results have turned me off. Those teen and pre-teen voters throw everything completely off, at times. I have to admit they "usually" get the final two right (not when Blake Lewis reached the finals two years ago, IMO), but to have good singers get booted while inferior ones advance takes some of the fun away. On the other hand, you do have to admit it adds a touch of uncertainty to the show, don't cha? -- Gary

Posts: 3 (01/09/09 07:50:42) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I used to watch parts of the funny auditions, but I've watched a whole season once or twice in the past Darn that TiVo! I actually liked Blake Lewis, I thought he should win LOL. The season that Sanjaya was promoted week after week was very interesting. I wouldn't have voted for him in a million years, but he was funny and people were always wondering what was going to happen next. He brought a sense of humor and fun to the show. My husband loved him (because he was bad, I guess), but I was happy to see him go.

Had a wonderful smile, stood up to Simon's insults well, and the nation's insults, also. Saw him in the Omaha tour show and he really did add some zest to a show which needed it. -- Gary

I think there were two years that weren't that good, but I enjoyed last year a lot. I think this will be a good year.

What the story didn't say was that she's an old friend of Paula's. I also don't agree with the statement that Randy and Paula were lenient judgs. Randy took a harder tone last year....I think that was a backlash to Simon's popularity....I disagreed with Randy's opinions last year more than with Paula's. I'm not sure if I'll like having a fourth judge, but I think it's probably a payoff to keep Simon happy...he get's the deciding vote. Last year he was clearly, very clearly, unhappy with some of the decisions. -- Gary

I will be away for the first couple episodes - I will TIVO them and as they are the bad auditions I can get through them pretty quickly when I get back. The fourth judge will be interesting - and it leaves the possibility for a tie - which could add some drama / excitement. Paula's judging never seems like much to me, way to many comments about how you are "living your dream", "you look beautiful","doing what you love", etc. Randy is always saying "you da bomb" or "dawg". I really think the show would have been much better off if each season they changed one judge so no judge is there more than 2 years. But it appears that we are not the only ones getting less enthused about the winners, if you look at how few of the last few seasons still have recording contracts you can tell that the bloom is off the rose and winning or being in the top couple is no longer a guaranteed gold ticket. - John

My initial perceptions: They did, as advertised, seem to cut back on the lousy auditions. Tuesday's talent was good but probably not as good as last year....but of course this was just the first night...there's a long way to go. I'm not sure if the fourth judge is going to add anything to the show, but the new setup, as discussed before, bolsters Simon's clout with his deciding vote. Like most guys, I enjoyed the swimsuit girl, although I don't think she's going to get past the first round in Hollywood. -- Gary

Wednesday's show from Kansas City had more good talent than the Tuesday show. There's a lot of talent in America, apparently, plus a lot of singers who THINK they're great. Jason Castro's brother was surprisingly good, especially for somebody who said he only started singing 20 days before he auditioned. I came across a story a week ago in which Simon said last year had a lot of people who seemed like professional reality show performers...a rather strange way of putting it, but it did point to the fact that a lot of the singers had professional experience behind them. Looks like a lot of this year's crop does, also. -- Gary

So far I have not seen anything that got me real excited, and from the few posts in this thread I guess I am not the only one. The new judge does not seem to make any difference and I think is just there to keep Paula under control. And personally I don't like the fact they took the girl that had a record contract and lost it, I feel like the contestants should be newcomers - not pros. I hope that as we get into the real part of the show I see more that gets me excited, but so far I don't find any of the contestants memorable - - John

I do find that it's becoming stale, and the new judge has added nothing to change that. Also, there wont be a Canadian Idol this summer, which really ticks me off. The reason given was that it's an expensive show to produce and the network anticipates losses in advertising revenue such that the show will lose money. It made me think a lot about what drives the show. Of course, all TV shows are driven by advertising and making money, but usually you dont have this fact thrust in your face. They say it will be back next year, but... I wonder if American Idol is next. I am often tempted to scrap TV altogether and just read for my news and entertainment. ARL

I don't think the fourth judge has added anything except to make Simon act even more like the 500-pound ape. He has the whip hand this season with his tie-breaking vote. I've "lived" for this program for quite a few years now, but it may be ending.

It is not like it is bad - just not real exciting to me. I don't know how much of it is the judges, the talent or just the fact I am not a big fan of the auditions but it is just not as much fun as it used to be... - John

But sometimes I'm forced to sit back and scratch my balding head. There was one girl on tonight (Jessica was her name) that I thought did pretty well, but all four judges absolutely trashed her. (It was quite a bit like that young girl from Florida last year, who had won several A.I. faux shows locally, but was lambasted by all the judges. The girl/woman tonight also said she'd won similiar contests and had won quite a few prizes.) It makes me wonder if I know ANYTHING about singing. Someday my son may decide to audition for A.I., and golly gee, I have very mixed feelings about that. I think he's good, but if the judges came down on him like they did that gal tonight, well, as a parent it would be very, very difficult to take. I mean, these are human beings we're talking about. To be put down as badly as some of these people are could be emotionally scarring. We are not talking about hopeless "talent" you understand. I know the judges obviously know more than I do, but Jessica just wasn't as lousy as they made her out to be. She apparently had won more than a few bucks and musical instruments at these talent shows. I don't get it. Obviously not many people on this board care, but in looking at the shows this year it's obvious the new producer is looking for personl battle fronts, lots of emotion, . Of course, what else can you expect? The new producer (I can't think of his name right now) was quoted as saying he wasn't going to make the same mistakes as the previous producer "bringing in a guy from Broadway who nobody had ever heard about (Andrew Lloyd Webber, nobody had heard about ALW?) and Dolly Parton (A talented writer and singer who seemed to be more interested in helping the singers than promoting her latest album like the other celeb mentor/singers last year). I will say this, it appears to me A.I. does indeed have a lot of talent this year, at least equal to last year. Don't think the fourth judge adds much, but probably doesn't hurt, either. -- Gary

I have not seen anyone or anything that holds my attention much - it is quickly becoming "background" TV. Very little talent that is exciting - lots of whiny people that if they did win would crash and burn within weeks. You mention mentors - what was the point of Barry Manilow the other week? He was on camera about 2 minutes did nothing with the contestants and was not advertising an album - Not sure how the season will play out but I am still waiting to see something that grabs me. - John

You have to admit, that when a "mentor" comes onto A.I., almost always there's a big tour coming or a new album out. And let's just say the A.I. audience hears all about it. -- Gary

There were a number of people I thought made it just for TV sake so they can get cut in another show. I mean how can anyone pretend that Nick whatever is going to make it as a singer! Maybe as a female impersonator in Vegas - but not as a singer! There are a couple that show promise - but I think singers like Whitney Houston have really hurt this generation of performers. They all think they have to be able to do the "big note" songs like she can and they can't do it. But you hear them trying so hard... I did find in funny in a Psych 101 way that they had no chairs for them to sit on while they were in the rooms waiting to find out who made it and who didn't! - John

You used to be able to go to Google two hours after the end of that night's show to get results and opinions, etc. I don't find the same amount of stuff available anymore. As for the talent aspect, it's all very subjective but I feel this year's singers are probably as good, if not better, than last year's group....overall. It's true no single singer has "grabbed me" yet, but there's a long way to go. It took awhile for David Cook to emerge last year. I was shocked when the two buddies were split up last night, Wednesday. Both were easily Top 36 material, IMO. -- Gary

No way. One thing really made me think - last nights show was cutting it down to the top 36 - but the last pair had a "sing off" and in a "surprise" move the judges kept both - and how many conestants do they now have? 36. So the judges must have known from the start that they would keep both of the last guys in the sing off or else they would have ended with 35 if they had cut one. Makes me wonder if some of the sights claiming that the whole thing is fixed might have a point... I again saw no singers that I felt were that impressive. People who came in 3rd in the first few seasons have better careers than some of the recent winners. When was the last time anyone heard anything from Taylor Hicks or Jordan Sparks? The good part is I got my dishes washed while it was on - so I guess I am one of those whose interest in fading this season... - John

Jordin Sparks still has time to blossom. One last thought: A.I. should forget about the balanced "girl-boy" numbers. I would have bounced at least half the girls without a second thought in favor of a number of the guys sent home. If A.I. truly wants the best singers, that's the best way to go. -- Gary

The girl who had the recording contract that got canceled - it ends up she also did songs on 2 movie soundtracks, had played Annie on Broadway and knew some of the executives at AI's production company - I guess they finally realized that is not what AI is aiming to be - so they kicked her off. I mean she has already been looked at and had her chance and the public passed. I am glad they did it - AI needs to be about undiscovered talent not people that already had their shot. What I found more interesting is that I just bumped AI from my TIVO this week in favor of an episode of Frontline on the economic crisis. I will try and catch AI if I can, but I realized I was more interested in the Frontline than this weeks Idol. - John
