I don't usually like to complain about the ups and downs of orders, but I'm wondering if anyone else out there is having a drought in Alibris orders. I
haven't had an Alibris order for over a week. Had been getting about an order a day. After their big upgrade, orders seemed to fall off a cliff. -- Donna
....for me. Dropped ABE and sold 9 books via Alibris, 2 biblio, one borders, one b&n in May. All of these sales actually were via alibris and its partner
programs. Average sale just under $15. For me that's decent for May. If I stayed with ABE, I probably would have had two, possibly three more sales, but
the listing fees would have wiped out those profits. Just over 3,600 inventory...but adding very few books these days. It's hard to get motivated with
summer coming on. Yes, I know, that's a self-defeating stance to take and I'm not proud of myself. -- Gary
Also, most of my Alibris orders used to be for decent amounts, over $20, many of them much higher. These days they seem to specialize in the under $10 market.
Yes, depressing, in more ways than one.
My Alibris sales picked up when their coupon came out, and then again when they had a newsletter featuring summer reading. I have been selling quite a few
religion/philosophy books, audio fiction (surprisingly), and vintage fiction series. Cannot complain about sales -- better than I anticipated for May.
I list the same about 8,000 books on 3 sites. I have about 500 paperbacks I have kept on-line mostly for their subject matter, and keep priced between 2.00 and
3.00. Those are the books I am selling lately at abe. Perhaps customers need to save due to economy. At least I don't lose on postage there, like I do
here. Biblio is dead, and now so it seems, is Alibris. The last sale here was a little golden book (a cheap copy). My higher priced books are like lonely
little petunias in an onion patch.
....to me, talking about success on various sites. When I used to go on the ABE forum, you'd have some folks say ABE outsold Alibris by a wide, wide
margin. For the last two years Alibris easily topped ABE for me, which is why I finally decided I couldn't afford to keep feeding ABE it's listing
fees. I can see why there would be a difference if the bookseller lived "overseas," which would favor ABE, but I am not sure why my books didn't
sell on ABE but at least account for some sales on Alibris. As I've stated before, some months it was 10-to-1 Alibris over ABE. That's a big, big
difference. -- Gary
My sales picked up mid May to make the month a decent one. I've been selling a lot of religion/philosophy in the $40 area, some travel & exploration
in the $12 area, and amazingly, a number of audio books, ranging from $5 to $18. I signed up on AntiqBooks and had first month sales in excess of $325.
spread over 4 books.
Within hours, orders started piling in (relatively speaking; I'm a small-time seller!), and not my $1.99 specials that I've had listed for 4 years, but
the $10-$25 books. Some Alibris, some Amazon, and even a Biblio. I hope everyone else is sharing this good fortune.
All I've done differently is start listing a few books every night, after I finish the work that pays the mortgage. Tomorrow I'm heading to a flea
market-type sale of what the college students left behind in the dorms when they moved out at the end of the semester, to benefit United Way. Anyone had any
experience at these?
I went through several weeks that were nothing. A few books here and there. This past couple of weeks have taken off. However,
we've noticed that we are selling more paper backs than the hard covers. I told a friend about it and she said, she always buys paper back copies because
they are easier to hold when lying in bed, on the beach or whereever. There's been no certain type. It's been nice. I hope it
continues.
This week, Oct. 25th to today, is one of the worst, and maybe the worst, I've experienced in the past couple of years, on ALL sites I list on! I have a bad
feeling that the economy as a whole has experienced a 'dead cat bounce' these past number of weeks, and this week it has come back to earth. :-(
ARL
My sales have been average overall-quite good earlier in the week but tailed off the last couple days. I'm increasingly finding I can list almost nothing
except recently published books. It used to be that university press items, e.g., listed for a decent price-a few dollars at least. Now the mega listing
seashells, BWB, motor city, etc., etc., etc., have all gotten in on these driving them to a penny or thereabouts. I'm afraid if I don't begin using a
scanner I'll be out of business real soon.
I can't complain since I have scaled back my book scouting drastically in recent months (because of some health issues, but that's another story), and
for some reason I find I go a week or so without a sale, then will get two to four sales in a two-day period. It helps when one of them goes for $50 to $90,
which thankfully has happened fairly often, but not as often as I'd like. -- Gary
My sales have dried up on Alibris this week but have slowed down on other sites as well. I normally get at least a few a day on Alibris only one or none a day
this week. My Ebay sales also dropped to 1/2 the sales price of what the same items sold for only two weeks ago. A new month and the holiday season are just
around the corner!
